188th Australia Day Regatta

NOTICE OF RACE

A cordial invitation is extended to owners of all yachts to enter this historic event on Australia Day, Friday 26 January, 2024 on the waters of Sydney Harbour. Owners of ocean-racing monohull yachts are also invited to participate in the City of Sydney Sesquicentenary Ocean Race to Botany Bay and return,

The Organising Authority for the Harbour race is the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron (RSYS) on behalf of the Australia Day Regatta Management Committee and for the Ocean race, the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia on behalf of the Australia Day Regatta Management Committee.

1. Rules

a) The races will be governed by the current rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) of World Sailing (WS), the Prescriptions and Special Regulations (as amended below) of Australian Sailing (AS), the Boating Regulations (Safety Equipment) of NSW, the 187th Australia Day Regatta Special Regulations and the Sailing Instructions as they apply to this event.

c) Harbour race: Each yacht must hold a valid Special Regulations Equipment Audit Form, minimum standard Category 7.

d) Ocean race: Each yacht must hold a valid Special Regulations Equipment Audit Form, minimum standard Category 4.

2. Sailing Instructions

a) Sailing instructions will be issued by the RSYS and CYCA and published on the appropriate club’s website.

b) Notices to competitors will be posted on the respective club’s website.

c) The courses will be as described in the sailing instructions.

3. Entries

a) The entry fee (incl. GST) is $45.00.

b) Entries are to be lodged online with the respective club as detailed below and are to be accompanied by the entry fee, the boat’s Special Regulations Equipment Audit Form and the boat insurance certificate.

c) Entries close at 1700 hours on Friday 19th January 2024.

4. Divisions

A minimum of five (5) boats will be necessary to create a separate division.

5. Advertising

Boats are subject to the advertising code as set out by World Sailing Regulation 20 (World Sailing Advertising Code) and any restrictions stated in class rules.

6. Other Instructions

Competitors are encouraged to fly the Australian Blue or Red Ensign during the event

7. Risk Statement

RRS 3 states: ‘The responsibility for a boat’s decision to participate in a race or to continue racing is hers alone.’ By participating in this event each competitor agrees and acknowledges that sailing is a potentially dangerous activity with inherent risks. These risks include strong winds and rough seas, sudden changes in weather, failure of equipment, boat handling errors, poor seamanship by other boats, loss of balance on an unstable platform and fatigue resulting in increased risk of injury.

8. Insurance

Boats shall have adequate current third-party property liability insurance cover and third-party personal liability insurance cover of not less than $10,000,000 (ten million dollars) for each incident.

9. Prizes

Prizes will be awarded for 1st , 2 nd and 3 rd handicap places. In divisions of one class with ten to fourteen entries, a prize will also be awarded for 1 st on scratch. In divisions of one class with fifteen or more entries, 2 nd and 3 rd scratch placegetters will also receive a prize. Special class and event prizes, together with Perpetual Trophies will be awarded. First placegetters will be invited to the Sydney Town Hall in March 2024 to receive their awards. Prizes for 2 nd and 3 rd placegetters may be presented immediately after the event or at the annual prize giving of the participating clubs.
